At 4-0 up after match 1 the boys could have been excused for taking their foot off the gas and becoming a little overconfident, a trait that we have sometimes seen over the past couple of years. But the same sense of purpose was again evident from the kick off - almost as though the boys are aware even at this early age what a 'big' game is all about. If its the case that they can raise the game at will (and I'm starting to think it is) then we really do have something special in the offing.
The line up was Greshan in the net, Rigby at the back, Blunden in centre mid with Keenan right and Jex left and Badley and Warhurst up front. Richards started sub.
The boys started at pace and it was evident early doors that they would have too much in the locker but as above, there was no showboating. The first half came and went in a flash, lit up by two exceptional strikes by young Keenan. Having shown his batlling qualities and team ethic at Thorncliffe the week before, he showed something we are getting more and more used to - goals that take the breath away. The first a guided volley in off the post as he ran in to meet Hugo's corner. The second a lobbed effort from just inside the Redfearns half after an attempted clearance from Redfearns keeper left him stranded. As the ball reached Keenan there was a call from Blunden on the touchline to relax, Keenan did his own thing and produced a finish of sheer quality as his first time effort floated over the keeper (think Beckham v Wimbledon all those years ago). 2-0 at half time.
The second half folowed a similar pattern with Greenhill dominating after a short period where Redfearns came out all guns blazing. Goals followed with K notching 2 (another dodgy claim on the second in my opinion but who wants to see own goals?!), Hugo nearly taking the net off its anchor and the keeper with it and Tom making a cameo appearance up front and finishing off for number 10.
James was voted MOTM for his fantastic all round performance but its fair to say every player can be proud of themselves.
Make no bones about it, Redfearns came with the attitude this was a game they could win and its fair to say they couldn't live with Greenhill's quality. Look at their record at the top of B division and that puts the result and performance in more perspective. Their manager, players and parents were gracious in defeat and left with this quote 'we were outplayed and out classed in every department - put that on your website'.
If results send out messages then this ones loud and clear - Greenhill are up for the cup.
In junior football, should all players be given the same amount of time on the pitch during a game, regardless of ability?
Yes, always. Getting kids involved is the most important thing.
Yes, unless it is an important game.
No. Winning is important at all ages, so the best players should play more often.
